The bold rhythm of the elephant foot.

Filpa has a presence that is difficult to mistake. Its defining motif is the large geometric Filpa gul, traditionally known as the “elephant foot” for its strong, rounded form and the way the repeated motifs seem to leave a steady trail across the field. Unlike the finer, more tightly articulated rhythm of many Bokharas, Filpa gives its pattern room to breathe. Large medallions sit in ordered rows, surrounded by smaller geometric details and framed by characteristic borders, creating a composition that feels bold without becoming heavy. There is something almost architectural about it — simple from a distance, intricate when you come closer. The repetition gives the rug its rhythm, while the scale of the guls gives it character. It is a design born from the same Turkmen weaving traditions that shaped much of the Bokhara world, but with a more graphic, confident expression.

We look closely at the proportions of every gul, the clarity of the drawing, the density of the weave and the quality of the wool, because with a Filpa, bold design only works when the making behind it is equally strong. The result is a rug with an unmistakable personality: warm, graphic and grounded, bringing the ancient rhythm of the pattern into a space that feels entirely its own.
