The tradition

Bold & Graphic Rugs rugs

Why old geometry looks modern

Because it is built the way much contemporary design is built: flat shapes, strong contrast, a few colours used at full strength, and nothing crowded. That is why a Kazak sits more easily beside a modern painting or a plain sofa than most florals do. These are traditional drawings, not modern designs, and in a room that is exactly their strength.

Three ways of drawing with geometry

Kazak argues in large latch-hooked medallions and stepped forms from the weaving of the Caucasus. Mamluk is constructed with compass and straight edge, after the carpets of fifteenth-century Cairo. Khurjin is built in bands and panels, after the decorated faces of nomadic saddlebags.

How much colour a room can take

A bold rug works best as the loudest thing in the room. Let one of its colours travel, to a cushion, a painting or a chair, rather than matching everything to it, and give it plain ground around it to read against. What colour does to a room goes further, and for quieter fields, every hand-knotted rug in the house is one step away.

Questions

Do you have modern rugs?

The most modern-feeling pieces in the house are its geometric ones, Kazak, Mamluk and Khurjin: traditional drawings that read as contemporary in a room. Loomish Reimagined, a new perspective on the hand-knotted carpet, is on its way.

Are colourful rugs hard to decorate with?

Less than people fear. Let the rug be the boldest thing in the room, give it plain surroundings, and let one of its colours appear once more elsewhere rather than matching everything to it.

What is the difference between Kazak, Mamluk and Khurjin?

Kazak uses large latch-hooked medallions from the weaving of the Caucasus; Mamluk builds kaleidoscopic geometry with compass and straight edge, after the carpets of Mamluk Cairo; Khurjin arranges bands and panels, after the faces of nomadic saddlebags.
