How big a living-room rug should be

Big enough that the front legs of the sofa and the chairs rest on it. In most living rooms that means 8 by 10 feet or more. A rug that floats alone in the middle of a seating group reads as too small, and it makes the room feel smaller with it. The size guide draws the common rooms to scale.

Under a dining table

Measure the table and add 24 to 30 inches on every side, so a chair stays on the rug when it is pulled out. A rug that catches a chair’s back legs is the most common mistake in a dining room, and the easiest to avoid on paper.

In an open plan

One rug to a zone, with floor showing between them, does more than one enormous rug trying to hold everything. Let the rugs share something, a colour or a scale, rather than match.

What a large rug costs here

The same rate by the square foot as any other size of its family. A large rug costs more because it is larger, never because of a premium on size: an 8 by 10 foot Kazak is eighty square feet at Rs 6,600, about Rs 528,000. Every hand-knotted rug in the house follows the same arithmetic.
